SUGAT & FLUVIAL PARADE OF STO. NIÑO (“The Traslacion”)
Perhaps the most religious among Filipinos, Cebuanos come together to venerate the first religious relic brought by Magellan more than 480 years ago. Known as “The Traslacion”, the Child Jesus or the Sto. Niño, as traditionally practiced, visits the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue on the Friday before the Sinulog celebration and is welcomed by Mandauehanon devotees. On the dawn of Saturday, the people bring the child Jesus back to Cebu City by way of a fluvial procession as a re-enactment of how the image got to Cebu.
Mandauehanons observe the Holy Week with religious processions in all churches in the city starting Holy Wednesday up to Good Friday. The Catholic populace visit churches in Holy Thursday in what is known as the Visita Iglesia. People mostly stay at home and come out only to attend religious activities. Normal daily activities resume during Easter Sunday when people celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Mano Terong is the only Mandauehanon to have served the three branches of our Government. He was first elected as Municipal Councilor, then a Provincial Board Member and finally a Cebu Provincial Governor. During his term as governor of Cebu, the Capitol building was constructed. The construction of the Mandaue Presedencia was also attributed during his term as Cebu governor.
