Human Resources

The phenomenal growth of the city is largely due to the peoples’ industry, unity, and strength, as characterized by the Mantawi vine. With an annual growth rate of 6.06%, the city is now host to more or less 280,000 residents.

Among the city’s twenty-seven barangays, Subangdaku registered the highest population count at 19,171 residents (2000 Census), followed by Banilad at 17,265. Paknaan has a population of 16,117 while Tipolo has 15,972 and Maguikay with 15,154.

The total population of the city as of the 2000 Census was 259,728 persons. This means an increase of 79,440 persons over the last ten-year period, from 1990. This is about 4.4 times the 1970 census figure for the city, which was counted at 58,579 persons.

The number of households in the city rose to 54,882 households in 2000 with a household size of 5 persons.

The annual average growth rate (AAGR) of the city population for the 1990-2000 period was 4.94%. This was lower than the city's average growth rates during the '90's and '80s, which were 6.51% and 5.03% respectively. However, the city's growth rate during the 1995-2001 is 6.06%, is still the highest among cities and municipalities of Metro Cebu. The rate is even much higher than the province and the country, at 2.4% and 2.34%, respectively.
